Callendar Estate Wood Fuel Enterprise
|
Background to fuel production
Callendar Estate is an agricultural and forestry estate with
substantial agricultural, forestry and development assets based in
Falkirk in central Scotland. The Estate has been in the ownership of
the Forbes Family for over 200 years and operates a number of rural
enterprises as well as promoting appropriate development of its assets
in partnership with a number of well known property development
companies.
The woodland estate extends to approximately 560ha and contains 429ha
of coniferous plantations and 131ha of broadleaved woods. It will
source all its wood fuel production from this wholly owned forestry.
The wood fuel production forecasts shown below are permanently
sustainable. The Estate is uniquely placed to provide a sustainable
supply of wood fuel – unaffected by market issues impacting on
suppliers who must rely on wood fibre that they don’t actually own. For
this reason the Estate can offer long term contracts with stable
indexation. Click here for more details of product specifications and prices.

Fuel production plans
The
Estate constructed a wood fuel depot and storage area in 2007. Lying to
the west of Craigieburn Farm in the centre of the Estate, the location
is close to the main bulk of the harvestable woodlands, away from
neighbours and has a large storage area along side an existing
farm/forest track which has an east west alignment. This track is
approximately 400m in length is sufficient to store 2880m³/2500 green
tonnes, [(L400m x W3m x H4m) x 0.6) = 2880m]. The round logs will be
hauled to and stacked perpendicular to the track on the southern side.
The round log pile will then be covered with a reinforced paper to
prevent rain wetting the logs. The logs will be stored in the round
until the required moisture content is achieved. |
| |
The shed has the
following dimensions - 15m x 30m and partial block side walls to a
height of 2m above this the shed will be enclosed by a weather proof
screen which can be opened to enable the chips to be blown directly
from the timber pile into the shed thus reducing the handling costs and
to allow for ventilation. The gables are fitted with doors of
sufficient size to allow access for loaders and trailers. The shed will
have a storage capacity of 1575m³ loose volume (400t of woodchips at
35%MC). At this moisture content the chips must be stored to a depth
not exceeding 3.5m to prevent heating. |
|
To enable indoor loading during wet weather an area of 150m² will be
kept clear of chips to enable a loader and trailer access to the shed.
This will reduce the storage capacity of the shed to approximately 275t
and also allow the chips to be turned, should heating be detected.
The Estate will manage a sustainable programme of harvesting from its
woodlands this means a maximum of 2650 green tonnes of wood are
processed through the shed each year. |
| |
In energy content terms this means the Estate could produce up to 1625
tonnes of wood fuel per annum at 35% mc. This is equal to 5.2 Million
kWhs per annum. This fuel can be achieved on a sustainable basis from
Estate’s own woodland resources. However, due to harvesting constraints
we would expect that this level of production could not be achieved
until 2012. Prior to that we can produce 980 tonnes per annum at 35% mc
for the period 2008 to 2011.

Wood Fuel Producer Group
The Estate is in the process of setting up a Wood Fuel Producer Group
made up of other woodland owners drawn from a radius of 30km from
Falkirk. This will provide a larger area of woodland from which to draw
wood fuel, providing additional comfort to customers that supplies will
not be interrupted, enable the effective management of peaks and
troughs, normally associated with timber harvesting and provide the
opportunity to expand the supply business keeping costs down and
spreading risk both to the producer and the customer. One member of the
proposed group has 120ha of coniferous woodland at production stage
which will enable the Group to double production to 3250 tonnes of wood
fuel per annum at 35%MC until 2013. Other woodland owners within the
propose Producer Group will see the total area of productive woodland
rising to 1235ha providing a strong and sustainable supply base for
future customers. Because of the need to store and air dry round logs
outside and the capacity constraints on chip storage in the shed we do
not think it would be commercially or practically viable to increase
the shed through put beyond around 5000 tonnes per annum per shed. | |
Wood Fuel Specification
The fuel will be supplied to normal required specification standards
for commercial scale wood chip boilers. The production target will be
35% moisture content. The particle size can be varied to suit the
boiler specification. To achieve required particle sizes the energy
chipper contracted in by the Estate simply needs setting up using the
correct screens and blades. As all fuel is produced from virgin
forestry it will be free from any contaminants. The Austrian fuel
standards shown below will be used. CEN standards can also be adopted
if needed. In effect this is a very high quality wood chip fuel
suitable for auger feeding mechanisms on boiler systems up to around 1
to 1.5MW. |

Lower cost wood fuels suitable for moving floor and ram stoker systems (for 1.5MW plus process\commercial heat and CHP projects) will have a different specification. The Estate does not intend to produce this type of fuel at this stage.
